Meet Our Dentists
Born and raised in Northern Ontario, Dr. Steve Chown moved to Fort Frances in 1998 after graduating from the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Dentistry. Known for his kind and caring approach, he takes the time to ensure patients feel comfortable in his chair.
“The best part of my day is when I can help someone overcome their dental anxiety to improve their oral health and feel better about their overall mental and physical health. This is done by listening, explaining in a way they understand, and providing an environment conducive to a positive experience,” says Dr. Chown.
Dr. Chown provides all aspects of dentistry, with a special focus on Orthodontics (Invisalign and Braces) and Bioclear restorative dentistry. He is a Certified Bioclear Dentist and Platinum Level Invisalign Provider. His advice to fellow dentists? “Listen to your patients and team members. Treat them as you would treat your loved ones, and you will be successful. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Success will come to those who show they care.”

Mike was born and raised in Fort Frances and considers himself lucky to have the opportunity to raise his family in his hometown with his wife Stephanie. Mike received his undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontrario, then was accepted at the University of Manitoba to complete his Masters Degree in Physiology. He then went on to receive his Dental Degree from Manitoba and returned to Fort Frances to begin practicing.
Mike has been practicing dentistry since 2001 and is happy to meet with patients to discuss their oral needs and how to best address them.

Dr. Joanna McQuarrie is a dedicated and compassionate dentist with a special passion for orthodontics, family dentistry, and advanced restorative techniques. Born and raised in Fort Frances, Dr. McQuarrie’s path to dentistry began as a high school co-op student, where she first experienced the world of dental care. This early exposure ignited a deep passion for oral health and patient care, shaping her career.
In 2006, Dr. McQuarrie completed her dental hygiene program, gaining valuable experience in patient care and honing her skills. As her passion for dentistry grew, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a dentist. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) concurrently with her Bachelor of Science in Dentistry degree from the University of Manitoba School of Dentistry where she graduated in 2013 with honors. Since then, Dr. McQuarrie has been committed to providing patients with the highest level of care in general, cosmetic, and orthodontic dentistry.
Dr. McQuarrie is proud to be a Bioclear Certified Dentist, specializing in advanced techniques that improve both the function and appearance of her patients' smiles. Bioclear is an innovative approach to restorative dentistry that focuses on creating strong, beautiful teeth using composite resins, offering an alternative to traditional methods like veneers and crowns. She is passionate about this cutting-edge technique, which allows her to provide patients with a more natural, long-lasting solution to dental issues like gaps, stains, and worn teeth.
Her practice offers a broad range of dental services, from routine cleanings to comprehensive orthodontics, restorative care, and cosmetic treatments. As a mother of three and wife to a supportive husband, Dr. McQuarrie understands the importance of creating a family-friendly environment where patients of all ages feel comfortable. She believes in educating her patients on the importance of oral health and works closely with them to develop customized treatment plans that fit their unique needs.
Outside of her clinical practice, Dr. McQuarrie is dedicated to continuing education. She regularly attends workshops and seminars to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in dentistry, particularly in the areas of orthodontics, Bioclear restorative techniques, and family care.
When she’s not in the office, Dr. McQuarrie enjoys spending quality time with her family at the Cabin or in a boat on the lake, exploring the outdoors, and continuing to expand her knowledge in dentistry. She is proud to serve the Fort Frances community and is currently welcoming new patients to her practice, where she combines her expertise, innovation, and passion for compassionate care.
